HISTORY

Alison and Des Hammill received a very unexpected but welcome phone call on the 8th August 2000.  It was from Richard Franklin who was with us on the Africa Overland trip.  To read about the original trip and to see how we all looked then CLICK HERE to visit the Africa Overland page. We had not heard from him since he left the trip in Nairobi, Kenya in 1973 and we had ourselves tried to get in touch with him many times and as recently as 1996 but with no success. No surprise, as we subsequently discovered he has been living in France since 1977.

Anyway it was great to hear from him and as he was coming to England on a business trip for a week we arranged to meet up in Salisbury,

basically a half way point.

This we did and a good time was had by all. Richard's wife, daughter and friend were also there. We have a lot of catching up to do and reruns of the trip (verbally!) and this will take ages by letter and email.

5th January 02

It is now some time since our unexpected and very welcome 'Africa Overland' reunion which took place in Salisbury.

You will be pleased to know that we have kept in touch and Richard has been able to come over to England and visit us again, albeit very briefly.

I suppose it is now our turn (Alison and Des's) to go and visit them and why not - a nice holiday in the South of France awaits us.

Apart from that the only major change for us is the addition to our family of a beautiful Grandson (Brandon) and Richard (in his Christmas Card to us) takes great delight in calling us Grandma Ali and Grandad Des - his turn will come!

Anyway Happy New Year to you all in France and around the world.

Apologies for the poor quality of the photographs - they are very large files but any more reduction in size makes us all look rather distorted and hideous.
